A Russian court has outlawed political organisations linked to jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny - labelling them as ''extremist''.

That puts them in the same official category as groups such as al-Qaeda.

It means Navalny's allies are banned from running in parliamentary elections this year.

The authorities now have the formal power to jail activists and freeze their assets. Navalny's allies had already disbanded their groups in anticipation of this ruling.

Another opposition politician, Dmitry Gudkov, has gone to Ukraine after being warned by people close to the Kremlin that he would be arrested if he stayed in Russia.

Most prominent anti-government activists are now either in jail, under house arrest or have fled the country.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Moscow, Russia.
