The Omicron variant has now been identified in almost a dozen countries in Latin America.
But health experts say South America is in good shape to tackle the mutation as it is currently the world's most vaccinated region.
Last year, Brazil was considered the key COVID-19 locus for a time but rapid vaccination drives in many countries have brought cases right down.
