At least 16 people have been killed and many more are feared trapped following a devastating fire at a garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The blaze, which took firefighters over three hours to control, also spread to a nearby chemical warehouse, triggering explosions and releasing toxic gas that contributed to the fatalities.
Witnesses report that locked entrances and rooftop doors trapped workers inside, making escape impossible.
The factory, a subcontractor for international apparel brands, lacked proper fire safety approvals.
For many families, the agonising wait for news of missing loved ones continues, with victims' remains reportedly so badly burned that DNA testing may be required for identification.
Bangladesh’s garment sector, employing over four million people and accounting for more than 10% of the nation’s GDP, remains plagued by poor fire safety standards, highlighting the human cost of fast fashion.

Al Jazeera's Zein Basravi reports.
