South Korea is battling a different kind of threat near its border with the North - an increase in the number of mosquitoes. Smart traps have been deployed outside the fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to catch mosquitoes potentially carrying malaria. The DMZ’s environment, with open water pools and wild animals, creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. South Korea fears these mosquitoes are coming from North Korea, where malaria remains a significant issue. Despite efforts to control the disease, cases have surged, with over 60 reported in Seoul by July.

Al Jazeera’s Eunice Kim reports from the South Korean capital, Seoul.
