Italy has allowed a ship carrying 179 migrants and refugees to enter a port in Sicily to carry out medical checks and allow minors to disembark.
Three other migrant rescue boats, with hundreds of people on board, are still stranded, waiting for permission to dock.
Humanitarian groups say food and medicine are running low, and conditions are deteriorating fast.
