At least five people have been killed after Russian forces fired at the main television tower in Kyiv and the city’s main Holocaust memorial, Ukrainian officials said, after Russia warned it would launch “high-precision” strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

Ukrainian authorities said five people were killed and five others wounded in the attack on the TV tower, located a couple of miles from central Kyiv and a short walk from numerous apartment buildings.

Ukraine’s foreign minister has posted a video on Twitter that appears to show an enormous explosion in Kharkiv’s Freedom Square.

“Barbaric Russian missile strikes on the central Freedom Square and residential districts of Kharkiv,” Kuleba said.

Satellites imagery shows a column of artillery and armour, logistics and support units more than 60km long bearing down on the capital Kyiv from the north.

Another is advancing from the south - the aim, to encircle the capital, intimidate the civilian population and force the surrender of Ukraine's government.

Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons reports from Lviv, Ukraine.
