The Wagner Group has been critical to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
Its fighters have been at the forefront in some of the hardest-fought battles but have also been accused of abuse and human rights violations.
But the use of mercenaries in conflict is not unique to the war in Ukraine.
The UN recommends effective accountability measures for mercenaries, mercenary-related activities and private security personnel. And unless world powers stop using proxy armies instead of those bound by international law – rights abuses will continue on battlefields.
